It's true that Hitchcock's stated intentions always stressed cold professionalism. But "profession" must be permitted its double meaning; when placed against the evidence of his films, these statements seem only the habitual disclaimers of a fat boy trying not to get beaten up.
Explicit insincerity is the essential first step towards mature socialization.
